MCOP 1 on company data, briefly

An IGNOU MCOM project is MCOP-001 (often typed MCOP 1), the six-credit fourth-semester course, and it can be built on published company data instead of a questionnaire. The guidelines allow a case study of one organisation and an inter-organisational comparison, and their own Subject Area example is a company's financial performance. Every methodology item still applies: the nature and source of the data, the rationale for the sample, the tool you use (here an extraction sheet), and the statistical tools with their relevance to the objectives.

Research Methodology for IGNOU MCom Projects (MCOP-001): Designs, Data Sources and Analysis

The method behind this casebook is published as an open-access guide by BK Sahni: framing commerce-research objectives, choosing a design, telling primary from secondary data, ratio and trend analysis, validity and limitations. Version 1.0, 18 June 2026, CC BY 4.0, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.20748782. It explains how to design and analyse your own study and contains no ready-made report.

What the guidelines already allow
  1. A company study is a named project type. The MCOP-001 guidelines list a comprehensive case study of one organisation and an inter-organisational study for comparison, validation of theory or a survey of management practices, beside the survey-based field study.
  2. Their own example is a finance study. Under the Subject Area box, a project on "Financial Performance of XYZ Ltd" is filed under Finance, and the first sample objective begins "examine the financial performance".
  3. No line makes a questionnaire compulsory. Item (v) asks for "details of the tools/questionnaire to be used and its relevance with the objectives". For a study on annual reports, the tool is the sheet on which you record each figure.
  4. Reliability and validity still have to be stated. Report item (iii) asks for the reliability and validity of the tools used; for published figures that means audited statements, one accounting basis and checked totals.
  5. References follow APA: item (ix) of the report structure says so, which covers every annual report and database you cite.

Where the MCOP 1 Casebook fits in the IGNOU MCOM project

The MCOM project at IGNOU, MCOP-001, runs from a topic and an eligible guide, through a synopsis approved at your Regional Centre, to a bound report sent to the Student Evaluation Division at Maidan Garhi. This casebook covers one route through that journey: projects whose evidence is published data about organisations, such as annual reports, stock exchange filings and regulators' statistics. The other routes already have their own pages, so this one does not repeat them.

Synopsis and report correction for an MCOP 1 company study

You write the synopsis and the report of your IGNOU MCOM project. We read your draft line by line against the MCOP-001 guidelines and your approved synopsis, and return it with corrections for you to make. For a company study the read is specific: does the methodology describe published data honestly, do the ratios answer the objectives, and can every figure be traced to an annual report page.

01

Synopsis correction, ₹1,000

All seven parts the guidelines list, with item (v) checked for a study without a questionnaire; objectives in neutral wording; the Annexure-I boxes and the guide's bio-data items checked before you post.

02

Report correction, ₹2,000

The ten parts of the report structure, ratio tables and their reading, hypothesis decisions, APA references for annual reports, and the documents that must be bound in.

What this desk does not do

We do not write your synopsis or chapters, supply figures, or sign anything. We do not provide or sign as a guide, and we do not submit for you. The guidelines require your own original work with a certificate of originality signed by you and your guide, and IGNOU's evaluator decides approval.

Four study types in the IGNOU MCOM project, two of them on published data

The MCOP-001 guidelines name four kinds of project. Which one you choose decides what item (v) of your synopsis has to say.

Built from the study types in the MCOP-001 guidelines; the "typical evidence" column is common practice, not an IGNOU list.

Type in the guidelinesWhat it coversTypical evidenceItem (v) has to explain
(i) Survey-based field studyAn empirical study of peopleA questionnaire or schedulePopulation, sampling, the questionnaire and its relevance to each objective
(ii) Comprehensive case studyA single organisation, or a multifunctional problem within it: problem formulation, analysis and recommendationsIts annual reports; internal records shared with permission; interviewsWhy this organisation, which years, what records, and how each figure was checked
(iii) Inter-organisational studyComparison between organisations, validation of theory or a survey of management practicesAnnual reports of comparable organisations; sector statisticsThe selection criteria, a common period and accounting basis, and the comparison measures
(iv) Any other research-based workDesigns outside the first threeDepends on the designThe design in plain words and why it suits the objectives

Types (ii) and (iii) are the casebook route. A study of one listed company over five years is type (ii); two banks or two paint companies compared over the same five years is type (iii). Write the type in your research design, using the guidelines' own words.

Survey or company data: which MCOP 1 route suits your topic

Choose the route for an IGNOU MCOM project from the question your objectives ask, not from which route looks easier. The table is a planning aid, not an IGNOU rule.

If your objectives ask aboutRouteWhy
Liquidity, profitability, solvency or efficiency of a companyCompany data, type (ii)The answer sits in audited statements; a questionnaire would only collect opinions about it
How two or more companies, banks or funds compareCompany data, type (iii)Same measures, same years, same accounting basis
Customer, investor or employee attitudes and behaviourSurvey, type (i)Only people can answer; see our survey-route desk
A company's practice and the people behind itCase study with interviews, type (ii)Published figures plus interviews, with the organisation's permission
A sector trend, such as UPI growth or bank NPAsPublished statistics, type (iv) or (iii)Regulator and central bank series, cited in APA

Plan the methodology of an MCOP-001 company study

In an IGNOU MCOM project built on company data, item (v) of the synopsis is where most drafts go wrong. The planner turns your design into a first line for each methodology item the guidelines list, flags what is missing, and checks your objectives for wording that assumes a finding.

Company-data method planner

Built line by line from the MCOP-001 guidelines of the Commerce Discipline, SOMS (file of 8 February 2023), read in October 2026: the four study types, the methodology items under synopsis item (v), the neutral-objectives rule and the Subject Area box. It plans and flags gaps; it cannot predict approval.

This planner needs JavaScript. Still seeing this line once the page has finished loading? The rules it applies are written out under the tool.

Where your figures will come from
Techniques you plan to use
Nothing you type leaves this page.

How the planner decides

Each methodology line comes from synopsis item (v) of the guidelines: research design; nature and source of data; sample and sampling technique with the rationale of the chosen issues and sample; tools for data collection and their relevance to the objectives; method of data collection; data handling and the statistical tools, with their relevance to the objectives. A missing item is listed as a gap. A case study with more than one organisation, or a comparison with fewer than two, is flagged against the guidelines' description of those types. Objectives are flagged when they contain words that presume a result, because the guidelines ask for objectives "in neutral manner, without any implicit assumptions about the findings". Three cautions are planning advice, not IGNOU rules: a missing period, a period shorter than three years, and statistical tests on fewer than twelve organisation-years.

Before the envelope is sealed

Have your company-data draft read against MCOP-001

An IGNOU MCOM project built on annual reports can look finished and still fail on paper: an objective no ratio answers, a figure no page supports, a review of literature ten years old. Send us your own draft, and it comes back marked against the MCOP-001 guidelines and your approved synopsis.

Your company-data synopsis, checked for

  • The study type named in the guidelines' words
  • Rationale for the organisations and the period
  • Nature and source of data, with years and basis
  • Objectives in neutral wording
  • A statistical tool tied to each objective
  • A review of literature that is current and matches the references

Your financial-analysis chapters, checked for

  • Every objective answered by a table
  • Figures traceable to an annual report page
  • Interpretation that matches the numbers
  • A stated decision for each hypothesis
  • APA references for reports and databases
  • The approved proposal bound in, Annexure-II signed

You remain the author of every chapter. Approval belongs to IGNOU's evaluator alone, and no correction service, ours included, can promise approval or marks.

Where audited figures come from

An IGNOU MCOM project on company data is only as good as its source. Use the organisation's own audited reports first and official statistics second, and record the page of every figure you take.

SourceWhat it gives an M.Com company studyWhere
The company's annual reportAudited balance sheet, statement of profit and loss, cash flow statement and notes, year by yearThe company's investor page. Listed companies must file the annual report with the stock exchange and publish it on their website (SEBI LODR Regulations, 2015, Regulation 34).

Access terms differ from site to site; check that a source gives every year you need before you fix your period.

APA pattern for an annual report: [Company name]. ([Year]). Annual report [year]. [URL]

Keep one basis throughout: standalone or consolidated statements, never a mix. If a later report restates an earlier year, use the restated figure and say so in the methodology. Name your definition of cost of goods sold once and apply it to every company.

MCO-05, MCO-07 and MCO-03: the M.Com courses behind your analysis

MCOP-001 has no study material of its own, but the M.Com courses you take before the IGNOU MCOM project already teach the toolkit a company study uses. IGNOU's programme page places MCO-05 in the first semester, MCO-03 and MCO-07 in the third, and MCOP-001 in the fourth with IBO-01 and IBO-06.

CourseWhat its 2026 assignment covers that a company study usesWhere it shows up in your MCOP-001 report
MCO-05 Accounting for Managerial DecisionsWhat financial statements are and how far they serve decision making; leverage ratios from a balance sheet; cash flow and funds flow analysisRatio tables and their reading in item (iv)
MCO-07 Financial ManagementWorking capital management and receivables; cost of capital; capital budgeting; dividend modelsTopic, objectives and the literature behind them
MCO-03 Research Methodology and Statistical AnalysisPrecautions in using secondary data; components of a time series; index numbers; the structure of a research reportMethodology in item (iii), trend indices, report layout

Cite the concepts from the published literature, not from the assignment booklets; the booklets show only what the course expects you to know.

Ratios that answer objectives in an IGNOU MCOM project

A ratio belongs in the report only if an objective asks the question it answers. Choose the measures from the objectives, then compute them for every organisation and year.

If the objective is aboutMeasuresFormula
LiquidityCurrent ratio; quick ratioCurrent assets / current liabilities; (current assets minus inventories) / current liabilities
Working capital cycleDays of inventory, receivables and payables; cash conversion cycle (Richards and Laughlin, 1980; used by Deloof, 2003, in a study of Belgian firms)Inventories / cost of goods sold x 365; trade receivables / revenue x 365; trade payables / cost of goods sold x 365; inventory days plus receivable days minus payable days
ProfitabilityNet profit margin; return on assets; return on equityProfit after tax as a percentage of revenue, of total assets and of total equity
SolvencyDebt-equity ratioTotal borrowings / total equity
EfficiencyAsset turnoverRevenue from operations / total assets
Growth over the periodTrend index; compound annual growthEach year as a percentage of the first year; (last / first) to the power 1 / (years minus 1), minus 1

Ratio and trend workbench

A calculator for your own annual-report figures. IGNOU does not prescribe which ratios to use; the formulas are the standard ones listed above, and every result comes only from what you type.

This workbench needs JavaScript. Still seeing this line once the page has finished loading? Work the formulas in the table above by hand.

Separate years with spaces.
Materials consumed plus purchases of stock-in-trade plus changes in inventories.

Two to five years per box, oldest first, separated by spaces, in one unit (for example rupees crore). Commas inside a number are read as thousand separators, so do not use commas between years. Leave a box empty and the measures that need it are skipped. Nothing you type leaves this page.

How the workbench works

Cash conversion cycle = inventories / cost of goods sold x 365, plus trade receivables / revenue x 365, minus trade payables / cost of goods sold x 365

It applies the formulas in the table above to each year, adds the mean of each row, builds trend indices with the first year as 100, and gives compound annual growth for revenue and profit when the first and last figures are positive. A ratio whose denominator is zero shows "n.a.", and a measure whose inputs are missing is listed as not calculated. The sentences it writes state only direction, first and last values, and the highest and lowest years; what they mean for your objective is yours to write. Year-end figures are used; if you prefer averages of opening and closing balances, say so and apply it to every company.

Writing the results from financial statements: table, reading, objective

Item (iv) of the MCOP-001 report structure asks for results "in tabular or graphical format" with the interpretation "given elaborately". When the IGNOU MCOM project rests on financial statements, each table follows the same pattern: the table with its number, title and source line; a reading that names the highest, the lowest and the direction; the link to the objective; the hypothesis decision where there is one.

Reads like a caption

"The above table shows the current ratio of the two companies."

Reads like analysis

"The current ratio of [Company A] fell from [ ] in 2020-21 to [ ] in 2024-25 while [Company B] stayed between [ ] and [ ]. This addresses objective 1: [state what the difference shows]."

The t-value of [ ] has a p-value of [ ]; as this is [below / not below] 0.05, H0[ ] is [rejected / not rejected].

The Discussion part then sets each finding against the studies in your review of literature: where it agrees, where it does not, and a reason drawn from the annual reports, for example a change in credit terms the directors' report mentions.

IGNOU MCOM project files for a company study: official papers and practice samples

Two kinds of file sit behind an MCOP-001 company study. The left column is IGNOU's. The right column is ours: study reference made to show structure, with every figure and finding left to you. They are not for submission, in whole or in part.

Students searching for an MCom synopsis PDF, or an MCOP-01 synopsis PDF, usually want to see the shape of a finished one. The sample above gives the shape for the company route; for a survey-route sample and the front page, our MCOP-001 sample PDF page and front page format cover them.

A guide for a finance case study: who is eligible

The MCOP-001 guidelines recognise three routes by which a person can guide an IGNOU MCOM project. Any one is enough:

  1. Commerce faculty of the School of Management Studies at IGNOU headquarters.
  2. Approved academic counsellors of the M.Com programme with five years of teaching experience at the study centres.
  3. Commerce or management faculty with five years of postgraduate teaching experience, or professionals holding a master's degree in commerce or an allied discipline with at least five years of experience in the relevant area.

For a company study, look for experience in the area of your topic: the guidelines ask students to choose guides interested in the relevant area and ask guides to restrict guidance to their own areas. A finance faculty member, or a chartered accountant who holds a master's degree in commerce and has five years in the field, fits a working capital study better than a marketing specialist. The guide's signed bio-data goes with every synopsis, whichever route the guide qualifies under.

The guide's papers: bio-data now, remuneration bill later

The guide signs two IGNOU papers at two stages. The bio-data goes with the synopsis, signed in original and dated. It must show the guide's name and date of birth; full address and contact numbers of residence and current workplace; detailed educational qualifications with degrees and specialisation, the name and address of the university or institution, the year of award and the percentage of marks; detailed work experience in chronological order with designation, period, and the name and contactable address of each organisation; and any other information relevant to eligibility, such as a current business card.

The remuneration bill (Annexure-III) comes at the end. It is IGNOU's own form for paying the supervisor for guidance, at ₹300 per student, and it goes in a separate envelope along with the report. The MCOP-001 guidelines set no fee payable by the student to the guide.

Posting the synopsis to your Regional Centre

For an IGNOU MCOM project, one copy of the synopsis goes to the Regional Director of your own Regional Centre, by hand, registered post or courier, with "MCOP-001" written prominently on the envelope. M.Com Online learners submit through the LMS portal. Keep a copy of everything.

In the envelopeGuideline line
Annexure-I proforma, filled in, signed and dated by you and your guideSubmission of Project Synopsis
Guide's detailed bio-data, signed in original and datedSubmission of Project Synopsis
The synopsis with its seven partsPreparation of Project Synopsis

A synopsis incomplete in any respect is rejected, and one without the duly signed bio-data and proforma is rejected too. The guidelines also list payment of the project evaluation fee under synopsis submission; the prospectus has it paid with the term-end exam form, and the receipt is later bound into the report.

While the Regional Centre decides

The guidelines promise a written communication of approval or non-approval, with the Project Proposal number, within two to three months of the proposal reaching the Regional Centre. For the status of your synopsis, write to your Regional Centre; the e-mail address of every Regional Centre is listed on ignou.ac.in. Project work starts only after the written approval arrives, so use this time to confirm that every annual report you need is available and to prepare a blank extraction sheet; fill it after approval.

When the answer arrives: approved, or returned with comments

If the synopsis is not approved, the evaluator's comments for reformulating it are communicated to you. Resubmit the revised synopsis with a fresh proforma, a copy of the rejected proposal bearing the evaluator's comments, and the Project Proposal number allotted by the Regional Centre. If the guide was not approved, choose a new eligible guide and submit afresh; a change of guide, for any reason, counts as a new proposal. For a full walk-through of rejected synopses, see MCOP-001 synopsis rejected: what to do.

The bound hard copy: order, certificates, envelopes

The IGNOU MCOM project report goes in original, A4 size, typed in double space, in a bound volume. Before binding, check it holds every document the guidelines list; a report received without any of them is returned to you for compliance.

Annexure-II wording. The printed certificate says the project is submitted for "the award of the Master's Degree in Business Administration", although MCOP-001 is an M.Com course. Leave the official form unaltered unless IGNOU tells you otherwise: write to the Registrar (SED), projects@ignou.ac.in, the office the guidelines name for report queries, and ask whether to submit it as printed.

Printing and binding are available at our press in New Delhi, with the bound copies posted back to you if you live elsewhere; you send the report to the Registrar (SED) yourself. Ask on WhatsApp.

Sending the report, and when the IGNOU MCOP 1 result comes

Send one typed copy to the Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, by registered post, speed post or by hand, with "PROJECT REPORT-MCOP-001" on top of the envelope. M.Com Online learners submit through the LMS portal. Annexure-III, your guide's remuneration bill, goes along in a separate envelope. A PR number is allotted on receipt; quote it in every query to the Registrar (SED), projects@ignou.ac.in. The report is not returned after evaluation.

Report submitted betweenResult declared with
1 December and 31 MayJune term-end examinations
1 June and 30 NovemberDecember term-end examinations

The report can be submitted at any time of the year, within the maximum duration of the programme. When IGNOU opens an online upload for a cycle, its page sets its own last date: for June 2026 it was 15 June 2026, and that page said reports received by email would not be considered. To check where your report stands, see how to check IGNOU project status.

Working back from the result you want

Count backwards from the window your result falls in: the report date, then the weeks you need for the analysis and writing, then the two to three months the guidelines allow for the synopsis decision, then a week for the post. For a company study, add time before posting the synopsis to confirm that every annual report you need exists for every year. For a worked planner with dates, use the backward planner on ignoumcomproject.com.

IGNOU MCOM project questions on the company-data route

Case-study questions from M.Com students
What is the IGNOU MCOM project? Is MCOP1 the same as MCOP-001?

Yes. MCOP-001: Project is the six-credit fourth-semester course of the M.Com and M.Com Online programmes, and students write its code as MCOP 1, MCOP-01, MCOP01 or MCOP1. IGNOU supplies no study material for it; the guidance comes from your guide.

Can my IGNOU M.Com project use only secondary data?

The guidelines do not rule it out. Their study types include a comprehensive case study of one organisation and an inter-organisational study, and their own Subject Area example is a company's financial performance. Name the nature and source of your data, give the rationale for the organisations and the period, and describe the extraction sheet as your tool.

Is a questionnaire compulsory for MCOP-001?

No line in the guidelines makes it compulsory. They ask for details of "the tools/questionnaire to be used" and list the "Questionnaire used etc." among the annexures. A study on annual reports describes its extraction sheet instead and puts that sheet in the annexures.

How many companies and how many years should a case study cover?

The guidelines set no number. A comprehensive case study covers one organisation; an inter-organisational study compares two or more. Five financial years is a common planning choice because it shows a trend without stretching the report past 60 to 80 pages; say why your period suits your objectives.

Do I need the company's permission for a study on its annual reports?

Published annual reports and filings are public documents; cite them. Internal records, interviews or visits are different: get the organisation's written permission and keep a copy for your annexures.

Which Subject Area do I write on the proforma for a financial-performance study?

The guidelines file a study on the financial performance of a company under Finance; of the areas the form's instructions list, that is Accounting & Finance.

Where can I see an MCom synopsis PDF for a company-data study?

In the samples section above. Our sample synopsis is an inter-organisational study of two listed paint companies, 2020-21 to 2024-25, built part by part on the seven synopsis components, with item (v) written for a study without a questionnaire. The two companies, every figure and the Indian studies are left for you to fill. It is study reference only: your IGNOU MCOM project synopsis has to be your own work, and no part of the sample may be submitted.

Does an MCOP-001 supervisor charge a fee?

No fee from the student to the guide appears anywhere in the MCOP-001 guidelines. What they do print is Annexure-III, a bill through which IGNOU pays the supervisor ₹300 per student for guidance; your guide fills it in and it travels in its own envelope with your report.

Is there a viva for MCOP-001?

It is one of the questions we hear most. The MCOP-001 file itself is silent on a viva. For the June 2026 cycle, IGNOU's online project page stated that the viva-voce of project reports "will be conducted under certain guidelines" and pointed students to their Regional Centre, which is where to ask.

Will IGNOU extend the last date?

Many students wait for an extension before they start. The MCOP-001 guidelines fix no last date for the report and allow submission throughout the year, so plan for the result window you want. Whether a particular cycle's online date is extended is announced by IGNOU, and nobody can promise it in advance.

How many copies of the report do I send, and where?

Many students ask us this. The answer is one typed copy, to the Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, and a copy kept by you, because the report is not returned. The synopsis, by contrast, goes to your Regional Director.

Can the project be written in Hindi?

The M.Com programme is offered in English and Hindi, but the MCOP-001 guidelines say nothing about the language of the project. Ask your Regional Centre before you start.

Will you write my IGNOU MCOM project?

No. The guidelines require your own original work and a certificate of originality signed by you and your guide. We check and correct your own synopsis and report: ₹1,000 for the synopsis and ₹2,000 for the report.
